Apex Predators - Lion versus Hyena - 5 Oz
This beautiful silver and partly gold plated coin issued by the State of Niue for 2022 in the purest 99.9% silver weighing 5 Oz (155.5 g) in top proof quality offers an original take on the fierce life of the Apex Predators by depicting the battle of two age-old rivals - the lion versus the hyena.
The reverse of the coin depicts the dramatic scene of the clash between the lion and the hyenas. The roaring lion lunges at a trio of attacking hyenas, which despite their much smaller stature are his equal opponent. The main motif of the animals, left in matt silver, contrasts spectacularly against the shiny gilded background.
Lions and hyenas have been bitter enemies since time immemorial. Skeletal finds dating back around 10,000 years prove this. Remains of lion bones have been found in caves, proving that they gnawed and crushed the jaws of hyenas. For two of the three species of hyenas, the lion is a source of food, because as scavengers they feast on the scraps from their kill. The exception is the spotted hyena, which obtains its food mainly by hunting. Like the lion, it seeks out large mammals. When hyenas and lions meet, fights break out. A lone adult lion facing a pack of attacking hyenas has no chance of winning. The cubs on both sides are most at risk, and neither lions nor hyenas will miss killing them.
The obverse features a portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Ian-Rank Broadley, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE 2022", the denomination "TEN DOLLARS" and weight and purity information.
The coin comes in a deluxe wooden box along with a certificate of authenticity, the serial number of which is repeated on the edge of the coin. The mintage is limited to 500 pieces for the whole world!
