Apex Predators - Cougar versus Bear - 5 Oz
A beautiful silver and partly gold plated coin issued by the State of Niue for 2022 in the purest 99.9% silver weighing 5 Oz (155.5 g) in top proof quality offers an original take on the fierce life of the Apex Predators by depicting the battle of two age-old rivals - the Cougar versus the Bear.
The reverse of the coin depicts a dramatic scene of a cougar and bear clash. The beasts are intertwined in direct combat. The setting of a deciduous forest is defined by maple leaves. Both the nimble cougar and the sturdy bear try to use their advantage, baiting their sharp fangs in a silent roar. The main motif of the animals is left in matt silver and contrasts spectacularly against the shiny gilded background.
Cougars and bears are traditional rivals for food in a common hunting ground. Unlike bears, which are omnivores and do not despise even carrion, cougars feed only on hunting. That's why they don't take many risks when confronted with stronger beasts. Rather, they intimidate their opponents and try to avoid injuries that would reduce the likelihood of success in the next hunt. However, the growing bear population has the upper hand in a fight. It is not uncommon for a bear to chase a cougar away from its kill. Cougars then expend great effort to survive and their numbers decline. Scientists have found that bears that no longer fight for food with cougars have a 20% lower daily energy expenditure.
The obverse features a portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Ian-Rank Broadley, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE 2022", the denomination "TEN DOLLARS" and weight and purity information.
The coin comes in a deluxe wooden box along with a certificate of authenticity, the serial number of which is repeated on the edge of the coin. The mintage is limited to 500 pieces for the whole world!
