Detailed description
Opus Magnificum - Tutankhamun
The unique set of eight silver coins (four round and four rectangular) issued by Solomon Islands in 2022 in the "Opus Magnificum" series and minted in 99.9% purest silver in Proof quality is dedicated to the centenary of the discovery of the legendary tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun in Egypt.
The coins are mounted in an ornate silver frame weighing 500 g, 99.9% purity and measuring 175 x 175 mm overall. The centre of the plate is decorated with the world-famous death mask of Tutankhamun. The surrounding full-width print contains authentic murals.
The reverse of the rectangular coins depicts valuable artifacts found in the tomb, such as the sarcophagus, the pharaoh's throne, the war chariot, and the treasure chest. The circular coins bear depictions of Horus in the form of a falcon and a scarab with the inscriptions "FALCON PECTORAL" and "SCARAB PECTORAL". Two others depict the guardians of the tomb with the inscription GUARDIAN STATUE" .
The discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun was made in the Valley of the Kings on November 4, 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. The significance of the find was immediately apparent when it was discovered that the seals of the guardians of the burial chamber were intact at the entrance to the burial chamber. Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon entered the 3,300-year-old sealed tomb on 26 November 1922. It was subsequently confirmed that the grave robbers had never penetrated the burial chamber and two other rooms. As a result, the sarcophagus and the rich burial equipment, which amazed the whole world, survived intact. The greatest amazement was the golden death mask, which became an iconic artefact of ancient Egypt. Pharaoh Tutankhamun himself was one of the lesser rulers of the 18th dynasty known as the New Kingdom. He ascended the throne around 1353 BC at the age of 9. He died without heirs sometime around the age of 19, probably from an accident. Worldwide awareness of his life was brought about by the discovery of his tomb.
The face of the frame contains a drawing of Tutankhamun's tomb and the serial number of the total number of sets issued. Egyptian hieroglyphics complete the background. The obverse of each coin displays the inscriptions "ELIZABETH", "SALOMON ISLANDS", the face value "FIVE DOLLARS", the year of issue "2022" and the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Brodley.
The silver coin frame is protected by a special acrylic glass presentation display and comes in a large luxury wooden case, together with a certificate of authenticity and a thematic publication in German and English. The edition is limited to 500 pieces for the whole world!
