Jerusalem of Gold Series - Mahane Yehuda Market

The Mahane Yehuda Market Gold Coin, issued by the Bank of Israel in a mintage of only 3,600 pieces for the entire world, is the eleventh investment coin in the very popular "Jerusalem of Gold" series. The gold coins in this series are issued as investment coins weighing 1 troy ounce (31.1 g) in the denomination of 20 New Israeli Shekels and in purity of the purest 99.99% gold.

The motif on the reverse of the coin aptly depicts the Mahane Yehuda market as a bustling center, alive from early morning to night, in the unique setting of Jerusalem. The view on the left depicts vendors offering a plethora of goods to passing customers at a stall. On the right, the coin field represents a couple seated at a bar table representing local restaurants and bars. The Tower of David rises in the background, symbolizing Jerusalem and its unique atmosphere. The graphic element in the middle connects the sun and the moon and represents the bustling life regardless of the early or late hour. At the upper edge, the inscription "JERUSALEM" is written in the description and transliterated into Hebrew and Arabic. In the coin field to the right, the denomination and year of issue are listed below and in three languages, and are capped by the mint mark, the Star of David. The description on the right gives the weight and purity in English and Hebrew.

The inspiration for the "Famous Lion of Megiddo" motif on the obverse was an ancient seal from the 8th century BC found at Megiddo (Armageddon) in the Jordan Valley. The seal belonged to Shem, a servant of King Jeroboam II, who was king of Israel during the time of the prophet Amos. The lion is also a symbol of the tribes of Judah and Jerusalem. The same lion of Megiddo was depicted on the Israeli five lira note in 1958, the five lira coin in 1978 and the half shekel coin in 1980. Above the lion is the Israeli national emblem and below it the inscription "ISRAEL" in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The obverse of all coins in this series is by Meir Eshel.
