Detailed description

Series "Jerusalem of Gold" - The Cardo

The Cardo gold coin, issued by the Bank of Israel in a mintage of only 3,600 pieces for the whole world, is the eighth investment coin in the very popular "Jerusalem of Gold" series. The gold coins in this series are issued as investment coins weighing 1 troy ounce (31.1 g) with a face value of 20 new shekels in the purest 99.99% gold purity.

Eighth official gold investment coin of Israel very low mintage! including a luxury wooden gift box with certificate of authenticity

The main motif on the reverse of the coin is the Madaba map of Jerusalem and in the background is one of the columns originating from the original Cardo Street built by the Romans. Near the top edge is the inscription "JERUSALEM" in English, Hebrew and Arabic. In the coin field on the right, the denomination, the year of issue and the Star of David - the mint mark - are given below. At the bottom edge of the coin are the weight and purity information in English and Hebrew.

The inspiration for the "famous Lion of Megiddo" motif on the obverse was an ancient seal from the 8th century BC found at Megiddo (Armageddon) in the Jordan Valley. The seal belonged to Shem, a servant of King Jeroboam II, who was king of Israel during the time of the prophet Amos. The lion is also a symbol of the tribes of Judah and Jerusalem. The same lion of Megiddo was depicted on the Israeli five lira note in 1958, the five lira coin in 1978 and the half shekel coin in 1980. Above the lion is the Israeli national emblem and below the lion is the inscription "ISRAEL" in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The obverse of all coins in this series is by Meir Eshel. Each gold investment coin comes in a deluxe gift box along with a certificate of authenticity.

Jerusalem Cardo - Aelia Capitolina Main Street

Cardo is the name given to the main street running from north to south of cities built in ancient times by the Romans. Together with the cross street Decumus, it defined the centre of the city and divided it into four parts.
After the First Jewish War, which ended with the conquest of Jerusalem by the Romans and the banning of Jews from entering the city, Emperor Hadrian built the Roman city of Aelia Capitolina on its ruins between 132 and 135 AD. The Jerusalem Cardo runs from the Damascus Gate (also known as the Shechem Gate or Nablus Gate) in the northern part of the city south to the Zion Gate from the Byzantine period of Emperor Justinian's reign. The cardo served as an open road for transporting cargo and animals. For pedestrians, it offered covered walkways lined with shops and Corinthian columns.
The Madaba Map of Jerusalem is part of a floor mosaic of a Byzantine church that was discovered in the 6th century in Madaba, Jordan. It is the oldest map of the Holy Land, showing Jerusalem and the original Cardo route in great detail. Subsequent excavations have uncovered it in the Jewish part of the Old City of Jerusalem in the same locations.
Today, the restored Cardo in the Old City is a living tourist attraction reflecting the history of Jerusalem. Along the colonnade, modern shops have replaced the original Roman ones in the same locations. People from all over the world once again walk along the same stone walkways lined with the same colonnades as people did nearly 2,000 years ago.
