Maple Leaf Investment Coin
Investment coins from the Royal Canadian Mint with the maple leaf motif are known all over the world. The Maple Leaf is such a powerful symbol for Canada that it is depicted not only on the national flag, but also on investment coins. The Maple Leaf gold coin has been minted by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1979. Since then, it has issued a new mintage every year. This gold coin is offered in 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz (1 oz ) sizes and is guaranteed to have a metal content (in troy ounces) of 0.9999 (24 carats), differing only on the obverse and reverse by the weight and denomination indications. Canadian coins can also be purchased in silver since 1988. A popular silver investment coin is the Maple Leaf 1 oz.
Description of Maple Leaf coins
Obverse side
The obverse side is decorated with the profile of Queen Elizabeth II facing to the right. Canadian artist Susanna Blunt created this particular version of Her Majesty in 2003. Different versions of Queen Elizabeth II have been on the obverse of all Canadian coins since 1952, when she ascended the throne of the United Kingdom. Other information on this side of the coin includes the year of issue and the coin's face value.
Reverse side
On the reverse we find a depiction of a maple leaf. This design was created by Walter Ott in 1979 and has remained in the same form ever since. Also included is the security mark - a small maple leaf with the year of issue, which can be seen under a magnifying glass. The security mark is made using the laser microfabrication technique used on all Maple Leaf gold and silver investment coins issued since 2014. The inscriptions on the coin are CANADA, FINE GOLD as well as the weight and purity.
Minting author
The Royal Canadian Mint has been minting Maple Leaf investment coins since 1979. The coin was designed by Walter Ott. The coins contain no other metals, only pure gold mined from gold mines in Canada. Because of the consistency of design and minting, the gold maple leaf is considered the standard by which other 24k gold coins are judged.
