Castle of the Přemyslid Monarchs

The Romanesque-Gothic castle of Loket was founded in the 3rd quarter of the 12th century under King Vladislav II on a rocky hill above the Ohře River, where the old Slavic settlement of Stary Loket had been located before. hrad_loket_stribrna_medaile_2011The castle and the adjacent town got their name from the mighty meander of the river flowing around the town with the castle in the shape of a bent elbow. This shape has been preserved in the castle's layout.

Soon after its completion, Loket Castle served as a support for King Wenceslas I in his dispute with his rebellious son, the later King Přemysl Otakar II. Since its construction, the Czech Přemyslid monarchs and their families often stayed there and held important diplomatic meetings.

The obverse side of the medal depicts the high horizon of the castle so that the side view of it corresponds to the shape of the elbow of the hand, which is placed compositionally below it. It is the main symbol of the castle and the city. This shape is further enhanced by the unusual placement of the text on the medal at right angles - in the shape of an elbow.

The design of the font on the reverse side of the medal is similarly unconventional - it forms a non-parallel copy, this time in the shape of a coat of arms.

On the reverse side of the medal, the oldest default symbol of the Přemyslids, the coat of arms with the motif of a flaming black eagle, was used. The eagle is a symbol of the sovereign power. The eagle in flames then signifies the sovereign's privilege, the right to announce his arrival at the Imperial Diet by setting fire to the villages around the Diet town. On the medal, the characteristic black colour of the eagle is represented by its outline embossing, so that its body is darkened by the gloss of the ground level.
