"Jerusalem of Gold" series - Jerusalem Windmill

The Jerusalem Windmill Gold Coin , issued by the Bank of Israel in a mintage of only 3,600 pieces for the whole world, is the ninth investment coin in the very popular "Jerusalem of Gold" series. The gold coins in this series are issued as investment coins, weighing 1 troy ounce (31.1 g), with a face value of 20 New Israeli Shekels and purity of the purest 99.99% gold.

The main motif of the reverse side of the coin is Montefiore's windmill, the outlines of the Old City walls and the Tower of David are marked at the bottom of the coin. At the upper edge is the inscription "JERUSALEM" and its transcription in Hebrew and Arabic. In the coin field on the right, the denomination, the year of issue and the Star of David - the mint mark - are listed below each other. At the bottom edge of the coin are the weight and purity information in English and Hebrew.

The inspiration for the "famous Lion of Megiddo" motif on the obverse was an ancient seal from the 8th century BC found at Megiddo (Armageddon) in the Jordan Valley. The seal belonged to Shem, a servant of King Jeroboam II, who was king of Israel during the time of the prophet Amos. The lion is also a symbol of the tribes of Judah and Jerusalem. The same lion of Megiddo was depicted on the Israeli five lira note in 1958, the five lira coin in 1978 and the half shekel coin in 1980. Above the lion is the Israeli national emblem and below the lion is the inscription "ISRAEL" in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The obverse of all the coins in this series is by Meir Eshel.

The Montefiore Windmill is one of the few Jerusalem monuments built outside the walls of the Old City. It is named after the British banker and philanthropist of Jewish origin, Moses (Moshe) Montefiore. He planned the building as part of a project to help the Old Yishuv community - the Jewish population in the Palestinian territories - to become self-sufficient. The building was completed in 1857 and became part of the newly emerging Mishkenot Sha'ananim neighborhood, the oldest Jewish settlement outside the Old City. The windmill produced flour until 1891, after which it was replaced by other steam-powered mills. Nevertheless, it continued to be used for other purposes and served as a watchtower for Jewish fighters during the 1948 War of Independence. For this reason, British troops bombed the mill during "Operation Don Quixote". On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel in 2012, it was restored in the spirit of the original building. Today it serves as a small museum of Moses Montefiore and commemorates his activities to promote industry, education and the health of the Jewish community in the Old Country.
