Wiener Philharmoniker
The Vienna Philharmonics, historically the second purely European, investment gold coins, are minted by the Austrian Mint Münze Österreich in 5 gold sizes. These coins are based on the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world's finest musical ensembles. In 1989, the gold coins were first launched in two sizes, 1 oz and 1/4 oz. In 1991, the 1/10 oz gold coin was added, followed by the half ounce (1/2 oz) in 1994, and the entire size series was completed in 2014 with the 1/25 oz. The coins are struck in the purest 999.9% gold (24kt). The denomination of the coins, initially given in shillings, was replaced by the Euro in 2002.
The popularity of these coins grew rapidly, and two years after their first release they were named the best-selling coins in Europe and the second best-selling coins in the world.
The reverse of the coins bears the motif of the musical instruments of the famous Vienna orchestra, which was chosen by its designer, Thomas Pesendorfer, an Austrian engraver and coin designer. The cello, placed in the centre, is surrounded by four violins on the lower side and a horn on the top left, bassoon and harp on the right. The name WIENER PHILHARMONIKER appears in the upper circle of the coin.
The obverse side depicts the motif of an organ in the golden hall of the Musikverein, the seat of the Vienna Philharmonic. The weight ''1 UNZE GOLD'', the fineness ''999.9'' and the year of mintage, which is the only one that changes every year, are then indicated below it. In the ring of the coin, the denomination ''100 EURO'' and the country of origin ''REPUBLIC OF OSTERREICH'' are then listed.
