Australian Kangaroo
The investment gold coins, featuring images of the iconic animal of the Australian bush, have been minted since 1991 by the Australian Gold Corporation, known as the Perth Mint and wholly owned by the Western Australian Government.
However, the original theme of the coins was the gold nugget from 1986 to 1989, and with it the name"The Australian Nugget" was introduced. Dr Stuart Devlin's iconic red kangaroo first appeared on the Proof collector's issue in 1989 and was switched to the bullion variant the following year. By now, however, it is only used for the 1 kg, 2 oz and 10 oz variants, with the 1 kg Australian Kangaroo being one of the top performers in the investment market. The collector-appreciated tradition of annually reinventing the kangaroo motif for the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz weights began in 1991, still under the Australian Nugget designation, which was only replaced by the new trade name "Australian Kangaroo" in 2009. The purity of all coins is the highest purity of 999.9/1000 gold.
The reverse side of the coin features a likeness of a kangaroo, the official animal of Australia. The marsupial motif has changed annually since 1991. The coin bears the inscription ''AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO'', or ''KANGAROO'', depending on the year of issue, and until 2007 also ''AUSTRALIAN NUGGET'' in the rim. Also the year of mintage, weight and purity of gold. The coins also bear the mint mark ''P'' and the initials of the designer.
The obverse of the coin bears a portrait of the formal head of state. Starting with the 2024 issue year, it is the likeness of Charles III with the inscription ''CHARLES III'', which has replaced the depiction of Elizabeth II with the caption ''ELIZABETH II''. The description identically states the name of the state 'AUSTRALIA' and the denomination. Coins minted in the period after the death of the monarch until the end of 2023 also include the years of her reign "1952 - 2022". The exchange of sovereigns on the obverse of the coins follows historical convention, with the King's gaze facing to the left, opposite the right-looking Elizabeth II.
The coin has the status of Australian legal tender and comes in a protective plastic capsule.
