Detailed description
Gold investment coin dedicated to the Canadian Confederation
Issued in 2017 and minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in the purest 99.99% gold, this gold investment coin is dedicated to the first silver Canadian dollar, the "Voyageur", and to the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation.
The coin is encased in a protective illustrated plastic card that contains the Canadian Mint logo, as well as the anniversary logo, purity and weight information, and serves as a certificate of authenticity. A serial number is also included (the worldwide mintage is limited to only 15,000 pieces).
The coin bears on its reverse the design used on Canadian silver dollars from 1935 to 1986, the "Voyageur" image designed by sculptor and artist Emanuel Hahn, representing Canada's early history and its importance in the fur trade era. It depicts two men, an explorer and an Indian, in a canoe carrying a load of furs marked "HB" (Hudson's Bay Company), sailing past an island where pine trees bend in the wind. The lines in the background symbolize the aurora borealis. The motif is complemented by the inscriptions "CANADA", "9999", "150 YEARS ANS", "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR". Also included is a small maple leaf with the numeral '17'.
The obverse of the coin traditionally shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "150 DOLLARS" and the year of issue. The coin has the status of Canadian legal tender.
