Maple Leaf

The Maple Leaf gold investment coin, also known as the ''Canadian Maple Leaf'', is made of 24-carat gold, 999.9% purity. The coin is issued by the Government of Canada and minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. It first saw the light of day in 1979, designed by Walter Ott, in a 1 oz. weight and this coin motif has been retained each year. In 1982, weights of 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz were added. 1/2 oz was added in 1986.

The maple leaf, which can be found on the reverse side of the coin, symbolizes an important Canadian product, the sugar maple, whose sap has been harvested for centuries by Canada's indigenous peoples. It has been a national symbol of Canada since 1860, when it served as a decoration during a visit to the country by Edward VII, Prince of Wales. The circle of the coin bears the inscriptions of the country of origin ''CANADA'', the weight and the fineness ''9999'' on both sides of the sheet. In the lower right part, next to the mintmark, is the coin's security feature - a small maple leaf that contains the year-end number of the issue, visible only under a magnifying glass. This microfabrication technique, found on all Maple Leaf coins, is made using a laser technique and has been in use since 2013. In 2015, radial lines were added to the background.

The obverse of the coin traditionally bears the portrait of the formal head of state. Starting with the 2024 issue year, it is the likeness of Charles III with the inscription "CHARLES III", which replaced the depiction of Elizabeth II with the description "ELIZABETH II". The copy identically states the denomination and year of issue. During the reign of Elizabeth II, a total of four coin portraits have changed on the obverse of Canadian coins, by Susanna Blunt (2003-2022), Dora de Pédery-Hunt (1990-2002), Arnold Machin (1965-1989) and Mary Gillick (1953-1964). On coins minted in the period after the death of the monarch until the end of 2023, these likenesses were represented by four pearls with the years of her reign "1952-2022". The design for the first coin portrait of Charles III for Canada was created by Steven Rosati. The interchange of the monarchs on the obverse of the coins followed historical convention, with the King's gaze facing to the left, opposite the right-looking Elizabeth II.

Canadian Maple Leafs are one of the world's most popular investment coins. More than 25 million ounces have been sold since production began in 1979. In addition, since 1982, these coins were the first investment coins minted in 999.9/1000 fineness.
