Detailed description
Giants of the Ice Age - Reindeer
Minted at the German mint Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung GmbH in 2022, this 1 Oz (31.1 g) investment gold coin in 99.99% purest gold is part of the Giants of the Ice Age series, which will introduce eight giants of the Ice Age over four years. The seventh coin in the series features a reindeer (Rangifer).
The reverse of the coin depicts a male reindeer with its characteristic branching antlers. The vast tundra leading to the mountain forests in the north are his natural habitat in constant migration. The coin's motif is complemented by the series name "GIANTS OF THE ICE AGE", weight and fineness. The outer rim of the coin features silhouettes of all eight animals of the series in order of issue. The motif of the reindeer is recessed and accentuated by the polished design, while the silhouettes of the other animals rise above the surface of the coin. The year of issue and the individual serial number of the coin, which corresponds to the marking on the certificate, are shown at the bottom.
The obverse shows the national emblem of the Republic of Ghana, while the lower part of the coin bears the inscription 'REPUBLIC OF GHANA' and the face value.
The coin comes in a gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1,000 pieces for the whole world!
The Arctic Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) as we know it today may have lived as long as 200,000 years ago.
Skeletal finds from the Pleistocene prove it. Reindeer inhabited vast areas of continental glaciers from the north to central Europe, Asia and the mid-west of North America. The scarce tundra vegetation was grazed, for example, in the company of mammoths.
At the end of the Ice Age, around 10 000 years ago, it became locally extinct due to global climate change. Further declines were caused by hunting by our ancestors. Part of the population followed the retreating glaciers into the northern regions, where they still live today.
The reindeer is a unique deer species, with antlers found on both males and females. Despite considerable variation in antler size between subspecies, it has the second largest antlers of any modern cervid species after the reindeer. In relation to body size, it is the first.
The reindeer's body is predestined to live in areas of permafrost, but it can also adapt to the warmer temperatures of the summer tundra. Its flattened and branched antlers allow it to find food under the snow. Similarly, the hooves are extended for walking in soft ground.
