American Buffalo
In 2006, the United States government debuted the American Buffalo, a 24-karat gold investment coin weighing 1 oz (31.1 g), minted at the West Point Mint in New York City. The coin's design was originally created in 1913 for the ''Indian Head'' nickel by James Earl Fraser and represents the beauty of the original American West.
The obverse of the coin bears a profile portrait of a Native American as a reference to the history of the New World. The artist created the image from sketches of the three Indian tribal chiefs who modeled for him. The inscription ''LIBERTY'' appears in the rim of the coin. The year of issue and the maker's mark ''F'' are at the bottom left.
On the reverse side of the coin is the motif of America's national animal, the American bison. This mighty bison symbolizes the pioneering spirit of the American nation. The name of the coin is also dedicated to it. On the sides of the animal are the mottos of the United States of America, ''E PLURIBUS UNUM'' in Latin and ''IN GOD WE TRUST'' in English. The circle of the coin then provides information on the country of origin, denomination and purity.
