Detailed description
Tutankhamun - 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb
An exclusive 1 Oz gold coin is being issued by the State of Tuvalu for 2022 in the finest 99.9% Proof gold to mark the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, the most important ancient Egyptian excavation.
The reverse side of the coin depicts the posthumous mask of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The mask contains coloured appliqués representing the blue glass of the famous artefact, obsidian, lapis and other semi-precious stones. The background depicts figures from the Book of the Dead, a collection of funerary sayings to help the pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife, as well as a tablet with the hieroglyphs "Ruler of Heliopolis". At the top you will find the inscription "TUTANKHAMUN" and below the mask an inscription depicting the anniversary of the discovery "100 YEARS".
The discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun occurred in the Valley of the Kings on November 4, 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. The significance of the find was immediately apparent when it was discovered that the seals of the guardians of the burial chamber were intact at the entrance. Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon entered the 3,300-year-old sealed tomb on 26 November 1922. It was subsequently confirmed that the grave robbers had never penetrated the burial chamber and two other rooms. As a result, the sarcophagus and the rich burial equipment, which amazed the whole world, survived intact. The greatest amazement was the golden death mask, which became an iconic artefact of ancient Egypt. Pharaoh Tutankhamun himself was one of the lesser rulers of the 18th dynasty known as the New Kingdom. He ascended the throne around 1353 BC at the age of 9. He died without heirs sometime around the age of 19, probably from an accident. Worldwide awareness of his life was brought about by the discovery of his tomb.
The obverse traditionally depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscription "QUEEN ELIZABETH II", the denomination "100 DOLLARS", the issuer "TUVALU" and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a presentation box with a transparent lid and numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 250 pieces for the whole world.
