Detailed description
1 Oz Gold Coin - Titanic
A unique gold coin issued by the Cook Islands State in 2022 weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g) of the purest 99.99% gold in extra high relief. Utilising new technological possibilities in minting, Smartminting commemorates the 110th anniversary of the tragedy of the ocean liner Titanic.
The reverse of the coin depicts the famous ship sailing between icebergs. The combination of subtle colour shading and the plasticity of the relief adds liveliness and perspective to the image. The inscription with the name of the vessel "TITANIC" is not missing.
Ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic, operated by the British White Star Line, sank on her maiden voyage on 15 April 1912. En route from Southampton to New York on a moonless night, she collided with an iceberg. The damage to the five watertight compartments below the submerged vessel was not foreseen by the designers, and water began to flood the hold. The rapidly rising water could not be sufficiently pumped out and keeping the Titanic afloat was impossible. The largest steamship of its time, which was thought to be unsinkable, sank into the ocean less than three hours after colliding with an iceberg. The tragedy claimed 1,517 lives among the passengers and crew. The cause of the large number of casualties was the lack of lifeboats, uncoordinated evacuation, the icy waters of the ocean, but also the blind belief that the Titanic could not sink. Only a handful of artefacts from the Titanic made it back above the water's surface from a depth of 3,800 metres. In 2000, a lump of coal was recovered from the bottom to power the massive steam engines. The certified piece is integrated into this coin.
The obverse tells several parts of the story. It is a map of the Atlantic with the projected route of the voyage and the location of the tragedy. In two sections the design of the ship is projected, which became a trap for many people during the evacuation. In the centre of the preview is an authentic fragment from a lump of coal recovered from the sunken wreck. The top of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and the face value "250 DOLLARS". The rim of the coin lists the Titanic's technical details in small print.
The coin comes in a stylish presentation frame with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of 110 pieces for the whole world!
Smartminting® is a revolutionary technology in the field of modern numismatics. The greatest advantage is the dramatic and unsurpassed heights of relief combined with intricate detail. High and ultra-high relief is possible on both sides of the coin, and the top of the relief can be placed as close to the edge as possible. However, the conventional embossing process not only requires more material (higher weight), but more importantly, the highest point must be concentrated in the center of the coin, which does not reach the same height as with Smartminting® technology. Another bonus of Smartminting® technology is the possibility of minting even in the highest Proof quality for coloured coins and, of course, the Antique Standard finish remains.
