Detailed description
Taniwha Maori art
This exclusive gold coin, issued by the Bank of New Zealand in 2017 and minted by the Royal Australian Mint in a premium proof quality of 1 troy ounce (31.1g) of 99.99% pure gold, is dedicated to Maori mythology and the mythical creature called Taniwha.
The reverse of the coin depicts the motif of Taniwha emerging from troubled waters. Taniwha is a mythical creature from Maori mythology, living in deep pools and rivers, dark caves or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or high waves. They are considered to be respected guardians (kaitiaki) of people and places. In some traditions, they are dangerous predatory creatures that abduct women. The rim of the reverse side is decorated with ornaments and inscriptions "KOTAHI TARA" and the denomination "TEN DOLLARS". The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by artist Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II" and the year of issue "2017".
The coin comes in a luxury wooden case engraved with the Taniwha motif, along with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 250 pieces for the whole world!
