Detailed description

Maori Art Series - Gold Coin - Koru

This exclusive gold coin, issued by the Bank of New Zealand in 2013 as the second in the "Maori Art" series and minted by the Royal Australian Mint in premium proof quality, weighing 1 troy ounce (31.1g) in purity of the purest 99.99% gold, is dedicated to the symbol of Maori art - the Koru.

The reverse of the coin features a beautiful, almost three-dimensional relief depicting the motifs of traditional Maori art. On the right is depicted a specific spiral shape called Koru (Loop) in Maori, derived from the shape of the undeveloped silver fern, which symbolizes growth, new life, regeneration, belonging, unity, purity, aroha (love), care, peace, balance, positivity and new beginnings. Within the fern leaf is the inscription "KORU" and below it is the denomination "$10". All is overseen by the God of the Forest, Tane Mahuta, positioned to the left.

The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NEW ZEALAND" and the year of issue "2013".

The coin comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a very limited edition of only 250 pieces for the whole world!

The coin is housed in a beautiful case that is made from 50,000 year old Swamp Kauri wood, which has been miraculously preserved to this day thanks to the New Zealand swamps. These trees grew for almost 2,000 years before they were buried in the swamp. Some were up to 12 metres in circumference and reached a total height of almost 61 metres. The etui was designed by Dave Burke, who was inspired by the style of the traditional Maori Waka huia (an ornate carved container for the most valuable personal items).
