Detailed description

The issue of a ducat commemorating the 100th anniversary of the launch of the St Wenceslas ducats in 2023 has been cancelled and replaced by an unlimited issue of ducats with the St Wenceslas motif, which will be on sale from 2024.

Gold trade coin with St. Wenceslas motif

The Czechoslovak ducats, known as St. Wenceslas ducats, were minted between 1923 and 1939 at the Kremnica mint. The coins did not have the status of legal tender. They were an issue of commercial coins without a face value and were available as one-ducats, jubilee one-ducats of the 1923 issue and two-ducats.
The public competition was won by the duo of Jaroslav Benda and Otakar Španiel. The final design was approved by the first Minister of Finance, Alois Rašín.

The obverse side of the ducat depicts Prince Wenceslas in a ring armour and cloak. He holds a weathervane at his right hip and with his left hand he is holding a partially visible shield with an eagle. The figure of the Czech patron is terminated by five arches above the knees. Above them on both sides are the initials of the authors 'O.Š' and 'B.'. The circumference of the coin contains the words of the prayer from the St. Wenceslas chant "DON'T LET US AND THE FUTURE DIE". The reverse side bears a small state emblem, which is complemented by motifs of lime branches. The circumference of the ducat contains the inscription 'CZECHOSLOVAK REPUBLIC'.

The gold used was of 986/1000 purity with a copper content of 13/1000. The weight of the single ducats was set at 3.490896 grams with a diameter of 19.75 mm and of the double ducat at 6.981792 grams with a diameter of 25 mm. The issue run of the numbered single ducats of 1923 was limited to 1000 pieces and additionally contained the five-year anniversary of the Republic "1918 - 28th X - 1923".

On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the death of St. Wenceslas in 1929, five-ducats and ten-ducats were issued with a new motif of St. Wenceslas on horseback. Ducats weighing 17.45448 g with a diameter of 34 mm g and 34.90896 g with a diameter of 42 mm were issued until 1938.
