Saint Wenceslas

(c. 907 - 28 September 935) Czech prince and saint who is considered the main patron saint of the Czech lands. In older literature, the year of his death is often given as 929, but most contemporary scholars are inclined to 935.

As a child, Václav, the son of Drahomíra, was brought up in Tetín by his grandmother Ludmila, who had him taught by the Slavic priest Pavel. After his father Vratislav became Prince of Prague, Václav was sent to Budč, where he learned Latin. While he was studying, around 915, the prince arranged for his son's post-priesthood. After Vratislav's death in February 921, Ludmilla's brief lieutenancy began. However, she was murdered in September of that year and the guardianship of the minor Wenceslaus was taken over by Drahomíra.

Václav took over the reign probably in 922. In 924 he had Ludmilla's remains transported from Tetín to Prague Castle, where he buried them ceremoniously. From the beginning, Wenceslaus' reign was characterised by the support of the Christian Church. In 929 Wenceslas was forced to submit to the Roman king Henry I. Páčník, who marched his army to Prague. This entailed a tribute that the Bohemian prince had to pay to the Roman king.

Not long afterwards, Wenceslas founded the Church of St. Vitus at Prague Castle, and he received part of the saint's relics from Henry. This course of Prince Wenceslas's policy did not please the party, which did not want to accept these religious-political ties. Its representative was Wenceslaus' younger brother Boleslaus I. Boleslaus the Cruel, who resided in his part-time principality in (Stara) Boleslav, where Boleslaus built a castle. Boleslav's opposition probably stemmed from similar roots to the lieutenancy of Drahomír.

All later literary sources depict the conflict between Wenceslaus and Boleslaus as very personal. It culminated in Wenceslaus' invitation to the consecration of a church in Boleslav, where the prince was murdered on the morning of 28 September 935 (the date 929 is usually given in older literature, which is also found in Kristian). Boleslav and his retinue occupied Prague Castle and became prince. He soon had Wenceslas' body transported to the new St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, where his remains are still preserved in the St. Vitus Chapel.
