Detailed description

Beneath the Southern Skies - 1 Oz

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2021, this 1 Oz (31.1 g) gold investment coin, struck in the finest 99.99% pure gold, is a tribute to Stuart Devlin, the designer of a number of Australian circulation coins.

The reverse design is from the Royal Australian Mint archives. It was created by Stuart Devlin in 1964 as one of the first designs for the Australian dollar. It depicts the constellation of the Southern Cross against the backdrop of the Australian continent. The original detail is a tiny silhouette of an animal. The location of the capital of New South Wales, Sydney, is marked by the ptarmigan, which was first captured here in 1797 as a new endemic member of the Australian fauna. The coin field is crossed by meridians, parallels and the intersection of the constellation axis. The design includes the face value "100 DOLLARS" and the weight and purity of the metal "1 OZ .9999 GOLD".
Australia as a British colony originally used the British pound, which was replaced by the Australian pound in 1909. Both currencies used the same division into 20 shillings, with a shilling consisting of 12 pence. In 1963, the decision to switch to the decimal system was announced. Under the new monetary system, the pound was to be replaced by the Australian dollar with a division into 100 pence. Part of the preparations included sorting out the coin design of the new currency. Stuart Devlin won the competition and became the designer of Australia's first "decimal" coins, introduced on 14 April 1966.

The obverse features a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the initials "JC" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the year of issue "2021". The coin has the status of Australian legal tender under the Monetary Act 1965.

The coin comes in a protective plastic capsule.
