Beneath the Southern Skies Investment Coins

The investment coin issued by the Royal Australian Mint , titled Under Southern Skies, is a tribute to Stuart Devlin, who designed a number of Australian circulation coins. The coin's design comes from the Mint's archives and the period when Australia was transitioning from the pound to the Australian dollar. It depicts the constellation of the Southern Cross against the backdrop of the Australian continent. The original detail is a tiny silhouette of an animal. The location of the capital of New South Wales, Sydney, is marked by the ptarmigan, which was first captured here in 1797 as a new endemic member of the Australian fauna. The coin field is crossed by meridians, parallels and the intersection of the constellation axis.
