Detailed description
1/2 Oz gold coin - Moravská Třebová Municipal Monument Reserve
The historic part of Moravská Třebová preserves a unique architectural ensemble of buildings from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. It was declared a monument reserve by a renewed decision in 1980.
The town was founded by the influential Bohemian nobleman Boreš of Rýzmburk around 1257 during the reign of Wenceslas I. The square layout of the central square, followed by a perpendicular street network and the castle on the side on an elevated position, dates from this period.
An important personality in the history of the town was Ladislav Černohorský of Boskovice, a member of the important Moravian noble family of Boskovice. He bought the Moravská Třebová estate in 1468 and it included the castle, the town and the surrounding villages.
He transformed the inconvenient Gothic castle into an early Renaissance chateau. The reconstruction started in 1485 and created the oldest European Renaissance building north of the Alps. Italian architects were involved, invited by the educated and well-traveled nobleman from their stay at the court of the King of Hungary.
Some elements of early Renaissance architecture from the original rebuilding have survived to this day. The most valuable is the entrance portal with an example of the first attempts at a new direction influenced by antiquity, which was relocated to the south gate in the mid-19th century. Two round medallions with the likenesses of Ladislaus and his wife Magdalena from 1495 are among the gems of Renaissance sculpture.
Around 1500, the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross was built on Cross Hill. In 1509 and 1540, two devastating fires hit the town, with which the original wooden buildings disappeared from the town. From the first reconstruction in the late Gothic style, the decorated portals and windows have been preserved. In the second reconstruction, the town was surrounded by two belts of walls with bastions. The architecture of the town was determined by the Renaissance and the houses in the square were given the same height. In the entrances of the town hall and the town houses, you can still admire the late Gothic and Renaissance mausoleums with cross-ribbed vaults.
At the end of the 16th century the Boskovice family died out and the property passed to the Žerotiny family. Ladislav Velen of Žerotín used the chateau as his residence and began extensive building work. Based on a project by the court architect of Emperor Rudolf II, Giovanni Maria Filippi, he extended the castle by three late Renaissance wings with arcades in the spirit of Mannerism. The sculptural works on the decoration of the courtyard are also unique.
After the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620, Ladislaus of Žerotín, as the leader of the Estates Revolt in Moravia, had all his property confiscated and preferred emigration to the death penalty. The estate falls into the hands of Charles of Liechtenstein. He completes the reconstruction of the castle, but it is used only by the officials and the administration of the estate.
In the 18th century, the Marian Column is built in the square. The Renaissance stone bridge of St. John is complemented by Baroque elements in the form of the sculpture Farewell to the Virgin Mary and a flood memorial plaque incorporated into the brick wall. A Stations of the Cross dating from 1723 runs across the bridge, connecting the Baroque-style restored parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Cross Hill. Here is the dominant feature of the town of Calvary, consisting of three crosses and Baroque statues of the Virgin Mary, St John and two angels.
A devastating fire in 1840 completely destroyed the castle and the town lost 186 houses. Alois II of Liechtenstein rebuilds the arcaded courtyard according to the original plans, but only one Gothic room and the gateway remain from the old part of the castle. The new construction in the Empire style determines the current appearance of the U-shaped castle with an open courtyard.
