Detailed description

1/2 Oz gold coin - Cheb Municipal Monument Reserve

On the reverse side of the coin is a collage of the most important architectural monuments, which are depicted on the ground plan of the Cheb Municipal Conservation Reserve. The description around the perimeter of the coin includes the text "CITY OF CHEB" and the year of mintage "2021". The initial of the author Jiří Hanuš, DiS., which is formed by the letter "H" in the frame, is located at the lower left edge of the ground plan of the Cheb Municipal Monument Reserve.

The obverse side of the coin depicts the unique complex of Cheb's wooden trusses, incorporating heraldic animals from the great state emblem, namely the Czech lion in the centre, the Moravian eagle to the right of it and the Silesian eagle to the left of it. The lower left beam bears the denomination of the coin with the abbreviation of the monetary unit '5 000 CZK' and the mark of the Czech Mint, which consists of the letters 'Č' and 'M'. The text 'MĚSTSKÉ PAMÁČKOVÉ REZERVACE' and the text 'ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA' appear around the perimeter of the coin.

The Cheb Urban Monument Reserve consists of unique architectural buildings from the 13th to the 19th century. Over the centuries, many of the original Romanesque buildings have acquired a new look or have been completely rebuilt. The intermingling of architectural styles takes us through the successive periods of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque or Romanticism. Remains of the Slavic wall and the city wall with a tower are still preserved. These cultural and historical buildings are under the protection of the National Heritage Institute.

The history of the town of Cheb dates back to the 9th century with the establishment of a Slavic fortress. The first written records date back to 1061. The boom began in 1146, when the Cheb region fell to Frederick I. Barbarossa of the House of Stauff. The Roman king and emperor had the original castle magnificently rebuilt and extended into a fortified castle - Cheb Castle. The subsequent granting of the status of a town in 1179 marks the beginning of further expansion.

In the 13th century the Romanesque Basilica of St. Nicholas, the grounds of the Minorite monastery with the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the convent of the Poor Clares were built. Rebuilding after a devastating fire in 1270 allowed the introduction of a new division of the town. With the restoration of the town fortifications and a number of religious buildings, a system of streets around the central square was also created. A block of eleven medieval houses, called the Spalicek, is the best preserved building on the square. At the end of the 13th century, the seat of German knights, the Dominican monastery with the Church of St. Wenceslas and Wenceslas Castle, which was strategically connected to Cheb Castle, were founded.

In the course of the 14th century, the increasing construction of half-timbered houses created a compact town protected by strong fortifications. Cheb became a prosperous town and continued to flourish until the start of the Thirty Years' War in 1618. The town, damaged by the siege of the Saxons and Swedes, began further reconstruction in the Baroque style. New monasteries and town houses are built and the town hall on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square is given a new look.
