Gold Coin - Ten Centuries of Architecture - Cubism

The upper part of the obverse side of the coin features a composition of heraldic animals from the large state emblem of the Czech Republic with a Czech lion in the middle. Underneath the composition is the Gočár Spa Pavilion in its original form, set against a background of a geometric figure depicting a stylized original park arrangement. In the lower part of the coin field, the name of the state "CZECH REPUBLIC" and the nominal value of the coin "2000 CZK" appear in one line below the pavilion and the name of the entire cycle in two lines below it. The depiction is complemented by the mint mark at the bottom centre.

On the reverse side of the coin is the facade of the Gočár Spa Pavilion in its present form and below it the two-line text 'Kubismus - Spa House in Lázně Bohdanči'. Below the text is the year of mintage "2005" and at the bottom edge in the middle are the initials of the author of the coin's design, academic sculptor Jiří Věneček.

Bohdaneč Spa

The town of Lázně Bohdaneč is located about 10 km west of Pardubice at the crossroads of roads leading from Hradec Králové to Kutná Hora and from Pardubice to Chlumec nad Cidlinou. The first mention of this town dates back to the 14th century.

The first written mention of Bohdanec dates back to 1343. It records a dispute between a citizen Kříž and the Bohdaneč parish priest, which culminated in a fight during which the altar slab was broken. However, it is probable that the settlement was founded much earlier and the name Bohdaneč originated from the personal name Bohdan according to the literature. In the 14th century Bohdaneč belonged to the Lords of Cimburk, on 8 January 1491 the estate was bought by William II of Pernštejn for 33 thousand kopecks of Prague groschen. His reign marked the period of Bohdaneč's greatest prosperity. The village was granted various important privileges, trade and crafts flourished. The most important achievement of Vilém was the establishment of a fish farm, of which Bohdaneč was the centre. To this day, 44 ponds from this farm have been preserved and continue to be maintained.

At the end of the 19th century, a significant change in the life of the town was brought about by the establishment of a bog spa by Jan Vesely, the tenant of the pond farm. A trial operation was started in 1897, and in the first year 70 patients used the services of the spa. In 1908, the first Czech regular public bus line was introduced between Bohdaneč and Pardubice, using a Laurin & Klement bus owned by the spa's founder Jan Veselý. Bohdaneč citizens were then provided with employment opportunities and benefited from the work of local craftsmen. At that time, the spa was also expanded and its popularity increased. Today the spa offers peat treatment, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, gymnastics, massages and inhalations. In a calendar year, the spa sees 7,000 patients.

Bohdaneč was granted the status of a spa resort in 1963 and became a town in 1971. The official name change to Spa Bohdaneč was granted to the town on 1 March 1980.
