Detailed description

Diamond Diadem - George IV. State Diadem

This exclusive diamond-encrusted gold coin, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2022 in a premium proof quality of the purest 99.99% gold and weighing 60.8 grams, is a diamond diadem that was made for the King, but made famous by Queens including Elizabeth II at her coronation in 1953.

The unique coin bears a stylised image of the central part of the diamond tiara on its reverse. The platinum-plated element consists of a cross (Cross Pattée) with a yellow brilliant in the centre. Each of the four curved arms is set with a clear brilliant-cut diamond. The cross is accompanied on the sides by a reworked and platinum-plated bouquet of national floral motifs. The rose blossoms are complemented by two smaller brilliant-cut diamonds. The inscription "CANADA" appears at the top edge of the coin and the denomination "250 DOLLARS" at the bottom edge.
The diamond diadem is also referred to as the George IV State Diadem. The jewel was commissioned by George IV in 1820 from the London jewellery firm of Rundell & Bridge. This flamboyant diamond crown, set on a velvet "chapeau gules" hat, was worn during the ceremonial procession to his coronation in Westminster Abbey.
The 7.5-centimetre-high jewel is adorned with 1,333 brilliant-cut diamonds, including a 4-carat yellow diamond set in the centre of the main clawed cross. The four crosses, arranged around the base, alternate with four bouquets of roses, thistles and shamrocks to symbolise England, Scotland and Ireland. Two rows of pearls and diamonds flank the base of the tiara.
George IV was the only man to wear the tiara. After his death it became part of the jewellery boxes of queens and queen consorts. The famous tiara's distinctive shape is depicted in the official portraits of both Queen Victoria and Elizabeth II. The symbolism of the tiara was also used by Elizabeth II in the ceremonial procession to her own coronation in 1953. The same diamond crown identifies her majesty on many postage stamps, coins or banknotes in the UK and Commonwealth countries. It inherently belongs with the Queen at the annual Opening of Parliament ceremony. The Diamond Tiara is one of the oldest and most important jewels in the Royal Treasury.

The obverse features a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "D.G.REGINA" and the year of issue.

The coin comes in a luxury wooden box along with a numbered certificate for the coin and others confirming the authenticity of the diamonds. The mintage of the coin is limited to 225 pieces for the whole world!
