Detailed description
A New Map of the World - 1812
This unique gold bullion coin, minted by the Royal Australian Mint in 2018 and weighing one ounce of the purest 99.99% gold, is dedicated to the contribution of the overseas discoveries of the famous British navigator James Cook (1728 - 1779) - the theme of the coin is "A New Map of the World" from 1812.
The innovative dome-shaped coin depicts on its reverse a contemporary map of the world with the names of the oceans, continents and some important territories. The map is crossed by the year-marked routes of James Cook's first (1770-1771) and third (1776-1777) expeditions to the southern hemisphere. Information on the weight and purity of the coin is aligned to the arc of the parallel at the bottom of the map. The decorated circle is inscribed "1812 A NEW MAP OF THE WORLD - CAPTAIN COOK'S TRACK. The sailor Captain James Cook charted New Zealand and discovered several new islands on his voyages. He refined the idea of the existence of a previously assumed unknown southern continent - Terra Australis. He thus brought a vast amount of new knowledge concerning the geographical layout of the southern hemisphere and the Pacific.
The obverse bears the traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley with the initials "IRB" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA", the year of issue and the face value.
The coin comes in a luxury gift box with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 750 pieces for the whole world!
