Detailed description

A New Map of the World - 1626

A unique gold bullion coin minted by the Royal Australian Mint in 2018 weighing one ounce of the purest 99.99% gold. The coin features a map of the Western Hemisphere by cartographer John Speed's "A New Map of the World" from 1626 and is the second coin in this series.

The innovative dome-shaped coin depicts a contemporary map of the world on its reverse with the names of the oceans, continents and some of the major territories. On the left side is an ornate border commemorating three figures from the period of great maritime discoveries - "America Discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus", "English Circumnavigators 1578 Sir Francis Drake 1586 Mr. Thomas Candish". Information on the weight and fineness of the coin is aligned to the arc of the parallelogram at the bottom of the map. In the circle of the coin is the inscription "1626 A NEW AND ACCVRAT MAP OF THE WORLD - COLUMBUS - DRAKE - CANDISH - MAGELLAN".

Christopher Columbus was a Genoese navigator who made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean and awakened interest in the new continent of America.
Francis Drake was an English privateer, sailor, vice-admiral, politician and slave trader. He became famous for his attacks on Spanish ships and ports.
Thomas Candish was an English privateer and explorer called "The Navigator". He was the first to attempt to rival Francis Drake by raiding Spanish cities and ships in the Pacific.
Fernando Magallan was a Portuguese seafarer who served the Spanish crown. For example, the Strait of Magalhães bears his name.

The obverse bears the traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley with the initials "IRB" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA", the year of issue and the denomination.

The coin comes in a luxury gift box with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 750 pieces for the whole world!
