Sapphire Coronation
A silver coin issued by the Royal British Mint in 2018, weighing 28.28 g, struck in 92.5% silver in top proof quality, celebrating the 65th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
The reverse side of the coin features the national emblem of the United Kingdom, the official emblem of Queen Elizabeth II. The emblem is surrounded by an oak branch and an olive branch. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions "SAPHIRE ANNIVERSARY", the years "1953 - 2018" and the initials of the artist Stephan Taylor "ST". Queen Elizabeth II is the formal head of the sixteen independent Commonwealth countries. She is the longest reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom. The obverse features a portrait of the Queen by Jody Clark with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "D.C.REG.DEF" denomination "5 POUNDS" and the artist's initials "JC". The edge of the coin is engraved with the text "Shine Through The Ages", loosely translated as "Shine Through The Ages".
Preparations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II began the moment she ascended the throne in February 1952. However, she was not crowned Queen until 16 months later - on 2 June 1953 in Westminster Abbey. On the day of the coronation itself, some 3 million people lined the streets to cheer the new Queen. Queen Elizabeth's arrival at Westminster Abbey, where 8,000 guests were already waiting, marked the beginning of the religious ceremony that would end the coronation. The Queen was dressed in a gown of white silk embroidered with the emblems of the Commonwealth nations, over which was draped a royal gown more than 5 metres long in velvet with a train carried by seven bridesmaids. At the altar, the Queen took the coronation oath to uphold the justice and law of the realm and to defend the Anglican faith. When she accepted the royal sceptre, apple and robes and thus became Queen, the people assembled cried out, "God save the Queen!".
The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was an important landmark in the history of television. The ceremony had never been filmed before. On the day of the coronation itself, people gathered in living rooms, cinemas and concert halls to watch eleven hours of live coverage. An estimated 20 million viewers (40% of the population) watched the coronation in the UK.
The coin comes in a gift presentation box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 6,500 pieces for the whole world!
