Whanau Marama: Family of Light - 2021
An exclusive set issued by the Bank of New Zealand in 2021 consisting of two 1/2 Oz gold coins minted in 99.99% gold purity in a premium proof grade is released as part of a series dedicated to the Maori deity, the atua. The second set of coins features Whanau Marama, the family of light, and the story of the sun and moon.
The reverse of the first coin depicts Tamanuiterā, the sun god. Tamanuiterā has two wives, the summer Hineraumati and the winter Hinetakurua. In summer, he ascends the sky in the southeast with his first consort, to travel across the northeast in winter, accompanied by his second wife. Hineraumati resides on the earth and promotes the growth of plants in agriculture. Hinetakurua dwells in the ocean and is associated with food sources coming from the sea.
The reverse of the second coin depicts the bright face of Maram, the moon god. Marama is the eye of night, whose phases in the lunar month (maramataka) determine auspicious or inauspicious nights and days. The Maori planned days suitable for working in the fields or fishing according to the maramataka.
The design of both coins uses variations of the spiral koru pattern that is the basis of traditional Maori art. The unfurling fern is a symbol of life, growth, strength and peace. It expresses persistent movement and a return to the beginning.
The description of the coins includes the title 'WHĀNAU MĀRAMA - FAMILY OF LIGHT' and the denomination in English and Maori 'TEN DOLLARS' and 'TEKAU TARA'.
The family of light (Te Whānau Mārama) consists of the Sun (Tamanuiterā), the Moon (Marama) and the Pleiades star cluster (Ngā Whetū Matariki).
According to legend, the first divine couple were mother Earth and father Sky. Together they created the universe, the gods, humans, animals and the laws of nature. The couple's tight embrace also held in darkness the common divine offspring who wanted to escape from their grasp. The siblings agreed to separate their parents. Only the god of the forest, Tane, was successful. But the space between heaven and earth remained dark, without a single source of light. So Tane turned to his siblings Tangotango and Wainui, who were the parents of Te Whānau Māramanebo, the family of light. Tane obtained their children (the sun, the moon and all the stars) and placed them in the sky. Since then they have adorned the chest of the father of the sky and illuminated the breast of the mother Earth.
The obverse of both coins bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2021" and the fineness and weight data.
The coins come in a luxury gift box. Each set includes an original certificate of authenticity. The set was issued in a very limited edition of only 150 pieces for the whole world !
