Winter Olympics 2010
The XXI Olympic Winter Games 2010 will be held in February 2010 in Vancouver, Canada. After Montreal and Calgary, Vancouver is Canada's third Olympic city. The Winter Olympics are returning to Canada after twenty-two years since the Calgary Games and to North America after eight years since the Salt Lake City Games. In addition to Vancouver, individual venues and accommodations are located on the University of British Columbia campus, as well as in the Callaghan Valley, the cities of West Vancouver and Richmond, and the Whistler-Blackcomb Winter Sports Centre in Whistler.
Following Olympic tradition, Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan accepted the Olympic flag at the closing ceremony of the XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin. The flag was raised on Tuesday, 28 February 2006, in front of Vancouver City Hall, where it will fly until the Opening Ceremony of the XXI Olympic Winter Games.
Vancouver was on the final list of candidates to host the Winter Games, along with the cities of Pyeongchang (South Korea) and Salzburg (Austria). Vancouver's victory was announced at the 115th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), held in Prague in July 2003. It was announced by IOC President Jacques Rogge in the early evening of 2 July 2003. In early April 2004, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Organising Committee (VANOC) was established.
In 2004, the preliminary budget for the Vancouver Winter Games was estimated at CAD 1.4 billion. In 2006, VANOC Board Chair John Furlong estimated the budget at CAD 1.7 billion, with increases from non-governmental sources, primarily sponsorship donations and broadcast rights. Of this amount, $580 million would be used to build and renovate venues in Vancouver and Whistler and $200 million to provide security during the Games. This will be overseen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
