Detailed description

The Royal Tudor Beasts - The Tudor Dragon 2024 - 1 Oz

An exclusive gold coin issued by the Royal British Mint for 2024 and minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold, weighing 1 Oz (31.21g) in Proof quality, this coin is part of The Royal Tudor Beasts series.
The series will present ten heraldic beasts from the genealogy of King Henry VIII. Tudor and his third wife Jane Seymour. The fifth royal beast is the Tudor dragon, symbol of valour and bravery and the vigilant guardian of the gates of Hampton Court.

The reverse of the coin depicts the dragon with a heraldic shield decorated with the heraldic arms of Beaufort. The interlaced chains on the coat of arms refer to the Tudor lineage, specifically to Henry VII's mother, Margaret Beaufort, who played a key role in the political processes of her time. The circular motif is complemented by the inscription "TUDOR DRAGON" and the year of issue "2024". It also includes the stylized initials of the designer "DL".
The Royal Tudor Beasts is a series of ten heraldic sculptures located on the bridge leading to the Great Tower Gate of Hampton Court Palace in London. The Royal Beasts were chosen by Henry VIII to symbolise the legitimacy of his family, their devotion to the throne, the strength of the Tudor dynasty and their association with the House of Seymour. His third marriage to Jane Seymour in 1536 represented a new hope for a dream male offspring and the preservation of the royal family line. The stylized form of the statues was elaborated for the coin series by David Lawrence.
The Tudor dragon, most often depicted as a beast with a crimson head and back, bat wings and a golden underbelly, is a mythical creature adopted by Owen Tudor, great-grandfather of Henry VIII, to emphasise his Welsh ancestry, which can be traced back to the 7th century to King Gwynedd. Henry VII, after his victory at the Battle of Bosworth, used the motif of a red dragon on a white and green background as his emblem when he entered St Paul's Cathedral on Coronation Day. Henry VIII, in making heraldic sculptures, then had this dragon placed on the left side of the moat bridge, where as a vigilant guardian it protects the gateway and also refers to the Welsh ancestry of the royal line.

The obverse bears the first coin portrait of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings with the initials of the artist. The description of the coin gives the inscription 'CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D', the face value and the year of issue '2024'.

The coin comes in a luxury lacquered wooden box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of 260 pieces for the whole world!
