Detailed description

The Queen´s Beasts - Black Bull of Clarence - 1 Oz

The 1 Oz (31.21 g) gold investment coin in 99.99% pure gold, issued by the Royal British Mint in 2018, is the fifth coin in the "The Queen's Beasts" series, which is dedicated to the ten heraldic animals of Queen Elizabeth II - the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III., the Falcon of the Plantagenets, the Black Bull of the Dukes of Clarence, the Yale of Beaufort, the White Lion of Mortimer, the White Hound of Richmond, the Red Dragon of Wales, the Unicorn of Scotland and the White Horse of Hanover.

The reverse of the coin bears the motif of a rearing bull. At its front hooves is the quartered shield of arms of the Kingdom of England - three leopards walking, as the emblem of England, and three lilies, as the English kings' claim to the French throne. The circumference of the motif is decorated with the inscriptions "BLACK BULL OF CLARENCE", the weight "1 oz", the purity "FINE GOLD, 999.9", the year of issue "2018" and the initials of the designer "JC".
The Queen's Beasts is a series of ten heraldic sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford to celebrate the Queen's coronation in 1953. Their stylized form for the coin series was created by the talented engraver Jody Clark.
In heraldry, the bull represents courage, bravery and generosity. The Black Bull of Clarence is associated with the rise of the House of York in the 15th century. It was depicted on the shields of soldiers in the army of the first King of the York dynasty and a key figure in the War of the Roses, Edward IV. It first appeared on the royal coat of arms in the 1660s after Queen Elizabeth I ordered a new coinage of all silver coins.

The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fifth and definitive coin portrait of the Queen. This is followed by the artist's initials 'J.C.', the inscriptions 'ELIZABETH II. D.G. REG.F.D." and the face value.
