Detailed description
The Australian Nugget 2019 - Welcome Stranger
The Perth Mint's investment coins are among the most popular in the world. In 2019, to mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the most famous gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger is an extraordinary investment coin weighing 1 ounce (31.1g) and minted from the purest 99.99% gold.
The Australian Nugget gold investment coins featuring the gold nugget were issued between 1986 and 1989. They were then replaced by kangaroo coins, which have been officially named The Australian Kangaroo since 2008.
The reverse of the coin depicts the "Welcome Stranger" motif of one of the largest and most famous gold nuggets. The background of the motif consists of radial spokes with the inscription "WELCOME STRANGER 1869". The coin's rim is completed by the inscription "AUSTRALIAN NUGGET", weight, fineness and year of issue, and the mint mark "P".
The Welcome Stranger gold nugget was found in 1869 in Victoria, Australia by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates. It measured 61 x 31 cm and weighed 72.02 kg (2,315.5 oz) when melted. The London-based Chartered Bank of Australia bought it from the finders for £9,381. It would have been worth £2.3 million in February 2019.
The obverse of the coin bears the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by engraver Jody Clark and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA", the face value "100 DOLLARS" and the artist's initials "JC".
