Taniwha Maori art
A unique set of gold and silver coins issued by the Bank of New Zealand in 2017 and minted in premium proof quality from the purest gold and silver, this set is dedicated to the Taniwha creature featured in Maori legends.
Both coins depict the Taniwha motif on their reverse, as she emerges from troubled waters. Taniwha is a mythical creature from Maori mythology, living in deep pools and rivers, dark caves or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or high waves. These creatures are considered respected guardians (kaitiaki) of people and places. In some traditions, they are dangerous predatory creatures that abduct women. The reverse side of the coins is decorated with ornaments and inscriptions "KOTAHI TARA" and the face value. The obverse of each coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II" and the year of issue "2017".
The coins are housed in a luxurious Wakahuia wooden etui (a decorative carved container for the most precious personal items) engraved with the Taniwha motif, whose eyes are decorated with original "Paua" pearls in a turquoise hue and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. The worldwide mintage of the gold coin is 250 pieces, while only 1,500 silver coins were issued. However, this exclusive commemorative set is limited to just 80 pieces for the entire world!
