Gold Sovereign - Collection 2011 - Proof
This exclusive Sovereign gold coin set contains five gold coins minted by The Royal Mint in 2011 in premium proof quality. In its millennia-long tradition of minting, the Royal Mint first struck Sovereign gold coins between 1817 and 1917, after the British government decided in 1816 to re-stabilise the currency of Great Britain due to economic difficulties following the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. The Sovereign was reissued in 1925 and has continued to be minted since 1957. The coin is named after the English Gold Sovereign, which was minted between 1489 and 1604.
The reverse of the coin depicts the famous motif of St George in armour on horseback fighting a dragon by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. It is followed by the year of issue and the initials of the author "B.P." The obverse traditionally portrays Queen Elizabeth II looking to the right, by British sculptor Ian Rank-Brodley. The portrait is accompanied by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF" and the artist's initials "IRB".
The coins come in a luxury wooden box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1500 pieces for the whole world!
