Old Town Clock

The cycle of silver-plated medals of the Czech Mint Old Town Astronomical Clock represents another sign of the zodiac - Capricorn - and the month of December, which belongs to it.

In ancient times, when the Old Town Astronomical Clock was created, it had only an astronomical dial. The calendar plate was added much later. The author of its current artistic form from the second half of the 19th century is Josef Mánes, the founder of Czech painting. He applied his paintings to the copper plate in oil. Following the example of medieval book illustrations, the individual paintings are gilded and the ornament that surrounds them is inspired by the Romanesque style. The larger targets bear figurative paintings that are allegories of the calendar months. Mánes was an admirer of rural romance, and so he came out of his study of Slavic folklore - mixing Czech, Slovak and Polish costume elements. The painter devoted smaller targets to animal signs, some of which are complemented by putti, playful children's figures widely used in the Baroque period.

One chubby cherub also appears on the obverse of this medal, where it accompanies the sign of Capricorn. The larger of the two circular compositions on the obverse is an allegory of the month of December - a woman and a man with a dog watching a butcher at work at a village slaughter. The reverse side of the medal belongs to the person of the painter standing in front of his masterpiece and the inscriptions JOSEF MÁNES - OLD TOWN ORLEO. The artwork of the medal as well as the whole series is the work of an experienced academic sculptor Daniela Kartáková.

You can save the December medal together with the other eleven issues from the series in an attractive collector's album, which you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
