Famous Plants of the world series
Exclusive silver-plated coin issued by the Republic of Benin in 2011 from the Famous Plants of the world series depicts a coloured and perfumed rose on its reverse (a unique colouring technique that ensures amazingly realistic colours, the coin is also perfumed with the scent of the rose) along with the inscriptions "FAMEUSES PLANTES DU MONDE", "ROSA INDICA FRAGRANS" and the year of issue. The obverse shows the national emblem of the Republic of Benin.
The coin comes in a blue gift box with grey and silver trim along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 2500 pieces for the whole world!
Roses
Rose (Rosa) is a genus of shrubby plants with over 100 species found in nature, all from the northern hemisphere and especially the temperate zone. They are mostly shrubs or climbing plants, sometimes also creeping. They reach a length of 2-5 metres, but rarely up to 20 metres.
Roses are very commonly and widely cultivated, especially as ornamental plants. The fruit of the rose is rose hips, which have important medicinal properties.
Between 100 and 300 separate species have been described, depending on the different approaches to delimitation taken by different botanists. Identification of some rose species is difficult because of the considerable morphological diversity and requires comparison of not only flowers, leaves, spines and rose hips, but also the calyxes after flowering or sterile annuals of related species. Often, some species are listed in a lower taxonomic unit; i.e. as subspecies, or interspecific hybrids are considered as separate species. The earliest evidence for the existence of roses dates from 40 million years ago.
Roses are deciduous, rarely evergreen woody plants. They usually grow into low to medium shrubs, sometimes rod-shaped, drooping or leaning against surrounding woody plants, thus taking on the character of lianas. However, roses do not have any special devices, such as tendrils, used for climbing, nor do they have wrapping stems.
