History of Warfare
After the Battle of Cologne, academic painter Karel Zeman presents another key battle of the Seven Years' War. The eighth silver medal from the History of Warfare series commemorates the Battle of Domašov.
In the spring of 1757, the Prussians invaded Bohemia. At first they wanted to force Prague to surrender, but Austrian Field Marshal Daun inflicted a crushing defeat on them at the Battle of Kolín. King Frederick II of Prussia did not learn his lesson and invaded Moravia the following year. His favourite tactic was to supply his troops by pillaging villages, and Daun ordered all grain and livestock to be gathered in fortified Olomouc, which Frederick then besieged. The city was on the verge of conquest, but the brave defenders prolonged the siege so much that the invaders ran out of supplies. Frederick knew that smaller supply convoys would be vulnerable, so he decided to meet his men at Olomouc with one huge, heavily guarded transport. Once on the road, the Prussian column stretched 45 kilometres. It numbered 4,000 wagons, 2,500 oxen and 11,000 soldiers. Daun put General Ernst Gideon von Laudon in charge of stopping the convoy. The Austrians under his command prepared for an ambush, for which they chose an open area surrounded by wooded hills near Domashov. It was 30 June 1758 and the artillery launched an attack on the convoy. The wagons, destroyed by the cannonade, blocked the road and the Austrian infantry moved in. The Prussians, who did not lose their temper under the attack, formed a wagon wall. They not only defended themselves, but at the same time led the counter-attack with great force. But then Laudon completed his grip on his enemies in a semicircle, and when his artillerymen hit the ammunition wagons, the Prussian wall broke. Laudon then gave the command to attack the cavalry... The convoy was completely destroyed, Olomouc was saved, and the cries of the fleeing Prussians went down in history: 'Himmel, Laudon!' - "Heavens, Laudon!"
"On the obverse of the medal is Laudon in middle age. He was 41 years old at the time of the Battle of Domashov. The portrait is accompanied by an imperial eagle with the letters FI and MT - Francis I and Maria Theresa. Today we hardly realise how the general was connected to the Czech lands - he took part in numerous battles that influenced our history, owned the Bečváry estate and completed his life journey in Nový Jičín," explains academic painter Karel Zeman. The reverse side of the medal is dedicated to a scene from the final phase of the battle, when the Austrians managed to collect immense booty - provisions, ammunition and millions in gold and silver coins.
Each medal includes a special certificate of authenticity with the author's accompanying words, drawings and historical text.
