The series of ten silver medals of the Czech Mint called Decameron draws its inspiration from the immortal set of one hundred Renaissance novels by Giovanni Boccaccio. The individual stories deal with love and passion, but also with betrayal and revenge. The seventh story of the eighth day, told by the noble Mrs Pampinea, is no different.
The scholar Rinieri has fallen head over heels in love with the young Florentine widow Elena. But she was faithful to her lover and decided to have fun with him at Rinieri's expense. She invited the scholar to her home on romantic pretexts, and while she and her true lover indulged in amorous games, she left Rinieri standing outside her door in the snowdrifts. The latter waited wistfully until the very morning, when he finally saw through Elena's game and swore vengeance. When, in time, Elena was abandoned by her lover, she turned to the scholar for a magic potion to bring him back. Rinieri seized the opportunity and prepared a false incantation. Desperate, Elena took his advice and allowed herself to be tricked - in retaliation, she was left completely naked, hanging on a tower where she was exposed to the scorching sun and troublesome insects.
The obverse side of the silver medal is dedicated to Scholar's humiliation - the frozen youth stands behind a closed door, on the other side of which Elena and her lover embrace in the heat of passion. At the top of the obverse is another erotic scene - it is a Roman spintria, a token used in ancient Italy as payment in brothels. "Personally, I like to choose bolder designs. If a book can bear such an illustration, why not a medal?" says with a mischievous smile the author of the medal, ac. sculptor. Vladimír Oppl. The obverse features the tree of life, whose branches and roots intertwine throughout the series. The reverse side of the medal is dedicated to the author of the Decameron, Giovanni Boccaccio, and the Italian town of Certaldo. The building on the left side of the reverse is the historic town hall, while the right side depicts the house where the artist worked. The years 1313, 1375 and 2013 mark Boccaccio's birth, death and the 700th anniversary of his birth, on the occasion of which the series of commemorative medals was launched.
Just two more stories and the collector's series will be complete. Don't overlook the eye-catching Renaissance album where you can store your titillating treasure.
