Statutory Cities

The series of kilogram investment medals of the Czech Mint made of pure silver is dedicated to the Statutory Cities, the most important seats of the Czech Republic. It was therefore time to include Brno, which is one of our oldest and most important metropolises.

After all, the first signs of settlement in this area date back to the Stone Age. Our Slavic ancestors arrived here as early as the fifth century AD and later became an integral part of the Great Moravian Empire. We owe our first written mention to Cosmas, who in his chronicle recounts how King Vratislaus I invaded Moravia with an army and laid siege to Brno. Brno was granted city rights in 1243 and the famous Špilberk Castle, which is still a Brno landmark, was founded at this time. The foundations of another famous building - the late Gothic Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, which forms the unmistakable panorama of the Moravian metropolis - date back to the twelfth century.

Although Brno residents are duly proud of these two landmarks, many of them would have liked to see a different architectural gem on the silver investment medal that would have had a new look. The medalist Irena Hradecká, DiS., therefore chose the Old Town Hall as the central motif. It is unmatched by its more famous "competitors" - its origins date back to the thirteenth century, it served as the seat of municipal power until 1935, and it is associated with a number of beautiful legends. The talented artist has depicted a cultural monument with everything, including a stone portal with five phials and a town hall tower with a Renaissance helmet. Jakub Matouš, DiS., then prepared an incredibly detailed bird's eye view of the city centre for the medal. The two artistic elements on the obverse side of the medal were skillfully combined by Jan Petr, DiS. The reverse of the medal, which is common to all the mints in the series, bears a map of the Czech Republic with the statutory cities marked and comes from the workshop of MgA. Miroslav Schovanec, DiS.

In addition to its impressive weight, the silver investment medal also boasts an extremely limited edition of 24 pieces.
