Canadian Wildlife Series - Grey Wolf
This silver investment coin minted from the purest 99.99% silver with a unique weight of 3/4 Oz issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2017 is dedicated to the Grey Wolf.
The reverse of the coin depicts a lone wolf perched on a rocky outcropping, howling at the full moon in the background. The scene is accompanied by the weight and fineness information "FINE SILVER 3/4 oz ARGENT PUR", the year of issue and the name of the issuer. Also included is a security mark - a small maple leaf with the year of issue.
The common wolf (also known as the gray wolf) is a large canid originally distributed throughout the northern hemisphere. Its range is now greatly reduced and in many places it has been extirpated. Nearly one-third of the world's wolf population is found in Canada. Grey wolves weigh between 36 and 45 kg and live in packs, usually consisting of a lead alpha pair and a few of their offspring. They feed on a variety of prey from insects to bison and muskoxen. Wolves have a prominent place in human mythology and culture, and there are many fairy tales, books, films and sagas about them.
The obverse of the coin features a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Sussana Blunt with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II. D'G'REGINA" and the denomination "2 DOLLARS".
