The Queen´s Beasts - Red Dragon - 10 Oz
The 10 Oz (311 g) silver investment coin in the finest 99.99% pure silver, issued by the Royal British Mint in 2018, is the third coin in the "The Queen's Beasts" series, which is dedicated to the ten heraldic animals of Queen Elizabeth II - the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III, The Falcon of the Plantagenets, the Black Bull of the Dukes of Clarence, the Yale of Beaufort, the White Lion of Mortimer, the White Hound of Richmond, the Red Dragon of Wales, the Unicorn of Scotland and the White Horse of Hanover.
The reverse bears the motif of the Red Dragon of Wales holding a shield with leopards in its talons, belonging to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last Prince of independent Wales before the accession of King Edward I of England.
The Queen's Beasts is a series of ten heraldic sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford to commemorate the Queen's coronation in 1953. Their stylized form for the coin series was created by talented engraver Jody Clark.
I see the dragon as a fearsome but strong, wise and powerful creature. In Wales, the red dragon Cadwallader, the legendary king of Gwynedd, is mentioned in the chronicles of the early 6th century. The red dragon of Wales passed into the coat of arms of Owen Tudor after he claimed the Welsh inheritance, which subsequently passed to his grandson, Henry VII. At the pivotal Battle of Bosworth, his troops carried the red dragon on their standards. With the Lancastrian victory, Henry ended the reign of the Plantagenets and became the first Tudor king of England.
The obverse shows the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by the same artist as the reverse of the coin, with the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the denomination "10 POUNDS".
