Detailed description
Rwanda Wildlife series - Meerkat
The Rwanda Wildlife series of investment silver coins, dedicated to African fauna and minted at the German mint BH Mayer Kunstprageanstalt GmbH since 2008, are becoming more popular and sought after by investors every year. The ninth coin of the Republic of Rwanda, issued for 2016, weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g) in the purest 99.9% silver, bears the Suricata suricatta motif.
The reverse of the coin accurately depicts a standing family of meerkats. The rim is inscribed "AFRICAN OUNCE", "1 oz FINE SILVER 999" and the year of issue. Meerkats are small carnivores of the marsupial family, inhabiting the desert regions of southern Africa, through the nations of Botswana, Namibia, Angola and South Africa. Adults grow to a length of 25-35 cm and weigh no more than one kilogram. Meerkats form colonies of up to thirty members, living in an underground system of burrows formerly dug by ground squirrels. Early in the morning, meerkats emerge from their burrows and sun themselves (at night the temperature in the desert drops to zero), then forage for food.
The obverse of the coin depicts the heraldic symbol of the Republic of Rwanda surrounded by the inscriptions 'BANKI NKURU Y'U RWANDA' and the denomination 'AMAFARANDA 50 MIRONGO ITANU'.
