Sioux Indian - 1 Oz

The 1 oz (31.1 g) silver investment coins, struck by the private Native American Mint in 99.9% silver purity, are a testament to the sovereignty of the Sioux Indian Nation.
The coins do not have the status of legal tender of the United States. Their minting is authorized for federally recognized tribes under a unique legal relationship established in the United States Constitution. The coins' collectible value is supported by the characteristic of being the only legal tender, non-government U.S. coins. Royalties from coin sales help Native American charities working to improve reservation life and raise awareness.

The coin's reverse issue themes draw on the historical and cultural legacy of the Sioux Nation. Each individual design is approved by tribal authorities to serve as a testament to each tribe's individuality, pride, honor and traditional values. The rim of the coin lists the name of the coin, the face value of "1 DOLLAR," the purity and weight of the metal, and the year of issue.
The Sioux Nation is made up of North American Indian tribes, united by a related language and its dialect. In the early 14th century, they took on the character of a tribal community referred to as the "Seven Hearths of the Council". Today, they are divided into two main groups, the Dakota and the Lakota. The name Sioux was first used in 1640 and comes from the French. It is an amalgamation of the corruption of the term "Nadowessi" (Little Snakes), which was used for them by the hostile Ojibwa tribe, and the French plural suffix "oux"; "Nadowessioux" was subsequently shortened to Sioux by the English. This designation is not considered politically correct, but is informally used by members of this nation.

The obverse of the coin bears a 19th-century Indian war shield representing a clash between two buffalo. The stylized depiction of eight teepees above it represents the eight regions of the Oglala Sioux Reservation. A ribbon below the shield adds the text 'OGLALA SIOUX LAKOTA'. The coin description states "SOVEREIGN NATION" and "AMERICA".
