Myths and Legends - Maid Marian 2022
A silver investment coin, minted by the Royal British Mint in 2022 in the purest 99.9% silver purity weighing 1 Oz, is being released as part of the new Myths and Legends series. The second coin in the series continues the medieval legend of Robin Hood and features the hero's companion, the Maid Marian.
The reverse of the coin features the beautiful maiden Mariana, designed by Jody Clark. In the form of an archer, she hides from her enemies among the trees of Sherwood Forest. The motif of the coin is conceived in an inner circle against a background of fine decorative guilloche engraving. Parts of the image transition into the rim area of the coin, where they are accompanied by the name "MAID MARIAN", the weight and purity of the metal "1 OZ FINE SILVER 999" and the year of issue "2022".
The Virgin Mary is the heroine and companion of Robin Hood from a medieval legend set in England at the turn of the 12th to 13th century. Initially passed down orally, the story expanded and gained a concrete framework with the advent of the printing press in the 16th century. Marian's character has evolved over the centuries, most notably in the 19th and 20th centuries. Her origins have often been associated with the royal line. The relationship with Robin Hood has also varied. She has been referred to as his companion or lawfully wedded wife.
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Jody Clark, the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the denomination "2 POUNDS".
