Myths and Legends - Robin Hood 2023
A silver investment coin, minted by the British Royal Mint in 2023 in the finest 99.99% pure silver, weighing 10 Oz, is being released as part of the new Myths and Legends series. The first coin in the series revisits the medieval legend of the hero who took from the rich and gave to the poor - Robin Hood.
Designed by Jody Clark, the reverse of the coin depicts the legendary outlaw as a skilled archer in the setting of Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood stands in the branches of a tree, his bow drawn, aiming at his adversaries. The coin's motif is conceived in an inner circle against a background of fine decorative guilloche engraving. Parts of the image transition into the rim area of the coin, where they are accompanied by the name "ROBIN HOOD", the weight and purity of the metal "10 OZ FINE SILVER 999.9" and the year of issue "2023".
Robin Hood is the hero of a medieval legend, set in England at the turn of the 12th to 13th century. Initially passed down orally, the story expanded and gained a concrete framework with the advent of the printing press in the 16th century.
It is from this period that the now familiar version giving the civilian name and origin of the legendary outlaw originates. He was supposed to be the medieval nobleman Robert of Lockley. On his return from the Crusades, he finds that he has been unjustly deprived of his property by the king's brother and deputy. King Richard the Lionheart is in captivity and cannot secure justice for him. He therefore takes refuge in Sherwood Forest, where he becomes the leader of a band of fugitives under the alias Robin Hood. He earns the role of a positive hero through his deeds against the authorities, led by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Legend has it that he and his band of friends robbed noblemen and wealthy merchants and distributed the loot among the poor villagers.
The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Jody Clark, the inscription 'ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the denomination "10 POUNDS". The coin's portrait of Elizabeth II may be replaced by a portrait of King Charles III with an appropriate caption.
