Myths and Legends - Little John 2022
A silver investment coin, minted by the Royal British Mint in 2022 in 1 Oz purity of the purest 99.9% silver, is being released as part of the new Myths and Legends series. The third coin in the series continues the medieval legend of Robin Hood and features his faithful friend Little John.
The reverse side of the coin depicts an aide-de-camp to the legendary outlaw, designed by Jody Clark. It depicts Little John with his battle staff among the trees of Sherwood Forest. The design of the coin is conceived in an inner circle against a background of fine decorative guilloche engraving. Parts of the image transition into the rim area, where they are accompanied by the name "LITTLE JOHN", the weight and purity of the metal "1 OZ FINE SILVER 999" and the year of issue "2022".
Little John is Robin Hood's representative in a group of outlaws hiding in the safety of Sherwood Forest. As the main character's closest friend, he is one of the few specifically named members of the retinue in the legend. The name Little John was a humorous nickname for a man who was described as a warrior of extraordinary height and strength.
The medieval legend of Robin Hood and his friends is set in England in the late 12th to early 13th century. Initially passed down orally, the story expanded and gained a concrete framework with the advent of the printing press in the 16th century.
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Jody Clark, the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the denomination "2 POUNDS".
