Detailed description
Congo Silverback Gorilla - 2015
Minted in 99.9% pure silver by the US Mint Scottsdale for the Republic of Congo in 2015, these 1 Oz (31.1 g) silver investment coins are dedicated to one of the largest primates on Earth - the Gorilla.
The reverse of the coin depicts the motif of a roaring gorilla surrounded by a tropical forest with the inscriptions "CONGO SILVERBACK GORILLA", the weight "1 Oz", the fineness "999 SILVER" and the year of issue. Gorillas inhabit the tropical and subtropical forests of Central Africa. Although their range is limited to only a few percent of Africa, their habitat covers a wide range of altitudes. The eastern (mountain) gorilla lives in the Virunga Mountains at altitudes of 2225 to 4267 m above sea level. The western (lowland) gorilla lives in dense forests and wetlands, even at sea level. Gorillas move with a peculiar gait, where they lean on the joints of their forelimbs. Adult males measure 165-175 cm and weigh 140-204.5 kg, but an individual over 183 cm tall and weighing 225 kg has been recorded. Some males acquire silver stripes on their coat from the age of 12, after which they are also known as 'silverback'. Adult females often weigh only half the weight of a fully grown male. Gorilla DNA is 98 to 99% identical to human DNA and after chimpanzees, gorillas are the closest relatives to humans.
The obverse shows the national emblem of the Congo with the inscriptions "REPULIQUE DU CONGO" and the denomination "5000 CFA FRANCS".
The coin comes in a plastic capsule. The mintage is limited to only 50 000 pieces!
