Detailed description
Black Flag: William Moody, The Rising Sun 2022
Minted by the Perth Mint in 2022 in 1 Oz (31.1 g) of the finest 99.99% pure silver, this silver investment coin is the fourth coin in the Black Flag series, dedicated to the famous pirate ships. The 2022 design features the ship of English pirate William Moody, which became famous as the Rising Sun.
The reverse of the coin depicts the aftermath of a pirate attack led by Captain William Moody. The plundered ship is left to its fate in the flames, while the Rising Sun sails away with its booty. The smoke cloud above the sinking ship hides a ghostly skull symbolizing death. The identity of the Rising Sun is announced on the main mast by Moody's personal flag - a black flag bearing a red heart struck by a white arrow. The motif is complemented by the mint mark "P". The rim of the coin is completed with the inscriptions "THE RISING SUN", "BLACK FLAG: WILLIAM MOODY", information about the weight and purity of the metal and the symbols of pirates - a skull and crossbones.
William Moody, also known as Moudy, was born in London. There is no record of his civilian life. He became a feared menace at sea in June 1718 with his work on the Rising Sun in the Caribbean and off the west coast of Africa. William Moody's name was associated with Olivier Levasseur and Thomas Cocklyn, with a pair of other famous pirates who were members of the crew and succeeded him as captains. Together they raided and pillaged ships, which they then set on fire or sent aground. They also came to prominence by destroying other famous pirate ships. In 1719, off the coast of Africa, some of the Rising Sun's crew mutinied. The rebel leader, Cocklyn, and other men were put ashore by the captain without a share of the booty. The remaining crew disapproved and relieved the captain of command. Moody was forced into a boat and sent to sea with twelve of his loyalists. According to one version of the story, he reached the island of New Providence in the Bahamas, where he accepted a royal pardon and renounced piracy. According to another, he was never seen again.
Before Rising Sun became the prize and flagship of the pirate Moody, she was called Resolution. She boasted an arsenal of 36 guns and a crew of 130 men of various nationalities.
The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadly and the inscriptions "QUEEN ELIZABETH II", "TUVALU 1 DOLLAR", the year of issue and weight and purity data.
The coin comes in a protective plastic capsule and is limited to a mintage of only 15,000 for the entire world!
